NOWHERE TO HIDE

Updated: Oct 3, 2025

Author Paul Hughes

This was specially written for a friend’s sister after she suffered a heart attack which left her partially paralysed and worried she was going to be a burden on others.

NOWHERE TO HIDE

As you slowly return to this uncompromising world,

You’ll find many changes will be gradually unfurled;

Some will annoy, confuse, or bring about despair,

But it’s futile to question whether it is fair.

You may not remember things, ‘though you know that you should,

Or be able to do all the things you once could;

Your will to fight on must come from inside,

For you know, from yourself, there is nowhere to hide.

Take strength from knowing there are many who care,

Are ready to show they are willing to share

Your fears and frustrations, your trials and your pain,

Providing you allow them to be close to you again.

You have long been a fighter, have continued to give

Of yourself. Now it’s time you learned to receive

From the many who love you, both at home and away,

Because you are you. And you’ve chosen to stay.

Good fortune has smiled on you for much of your life,

You’ve been a great daughter, sister, mother and wife;

Now it’s your turn to sit back, to be reassured,

Each new day is a bonus. Just reap your well-earned reward.
